You want premium prices. Do you look premium?

I was looking for somebody to do carpentry work in our new Houston studio. The job was fairly simple, so I went to Facebook Marketplace and started comparing quotes.

A few people came back with higher prices and told me they do quality work. They were professionals. They were not competing with the cheapest guy.

Fair enough. But my immediate thought was: how am I supposed to know that?

From where I was sitting, I had a Marketplace listing, a quote, and somebody telling me they were premium. The person quoting less was sitting right beside them on the same page. If neither has shown me their process, finished jobs, reviews, or what makes the work different, price becomes the easiest thing to compare.

That is not the buyer being cheap. That is the business failing to give the buyer a reason to pay more.

There is nothing wrong with finding customers on Marketplace. If that is where your buyers are, use it. But you cannot expect a stranger to take your word for it when you say your materials are better or your team is more experienced.

Show me the details. What does your work look like up close? How do you prepare the site? What do you do when something goes wrong? What did the customer ask for, and what did you actually deliver? Put the proof somewhere I can see it before I have to make a decision.

Your website, social profile, photos, videos, and reviews should support the price you are asking. A big following is not proof of craftsmanship, and an expensive website cannot fix poor work. But a strong online presentation helps a stranger recognize good work before hiring you.

If every buyer says you are too expensive, look at what they see before you argue about what you are worth.

You may be the premium option. Your marketing still has to prove it.
