Would you pay to keep your best client?
You already know your cost to acquire a customer. Whether you run ads or not, there is a number attached to every new client that walks through the door. Maybe it is $500. Maybe it is $2,000. Maybe it is $5,000. Whatever that number is, you accept it as the cost of doing business. You pay it every single month without thinking twice.
But here is a question that most business owners never ask themselves: would you spend that exact same amount just to not lose a current client? If a good client is going through a rough month financially, or they had a slightly subpar experience, or they are thinking about leaving for whatever reason, would you offer them a free month? A steep discount? Something to keep them in the ecosystem?
Most people just let them churn. They say "it is what it is" and move on to finding the next one. But think about the math for a second. If you lose one client and gain one client, you are at zero. You spent money to acquire the new one, but you also lost the revenue from the old one. Net result: nothing changed. But if you had just spent that same acquisition cost to keep the existing client (a free month, a bonus service, a personal gesture), you would still have them. And now when you sign the new client on top of that, you are actually growing.
The other thing people don't think about is the trust factor. When you extend that olive branch to a client who is struggling, the loyalty you build is insane. They feel seen. They feel valued. The chances of them staying for another six, twelve, eighteen months skyrockets. And the lifetime value of that client just multiplied because of one generous gesture that cost you the same as acquiring a stranger.
Stop letting good clients walk out the back door while you are paying a premium to bring new ones through the front.
