Why you need a "baseline" before you judge your marketing
Business owners love to post three videos, get 200 views each, and declare that social media doesn't work for their industry. That is like going to the gym three times and saying weights don't build muscle. You haven't even established a baseline yet. You have no idea what "normal" looks like for your account, so you have no way of knowing what "good" looks like either.
When we take on a new client, the first 10 to 15 posts are purely data collection. We are not trying to go viral. We are not trying to get leads on day one. We are just trying to figure out what the baseline metrics look like for that specific account. What is the average view duration? What is the average number of shares? Saves? Profile visits? Followers gained per post?
Once we know the baseline, then we can start testing variables. If your baseline is 500 views, and a new format gets 2,500, that is a 5x spike. You just found a winner. Now you replicate that format. You change one variable at a time. You build on what works. But you cannot find a winner if you don't know what average looks like.
The other thing we do is build what we call a "winners library." Over 90 days, we accumulate a collection of formats and topics that have proven to outperform the baseline for that specific client. By month three, we are not guessing anymore. We have data. We have a library of proven winners to pull from. But none of that is possible if you quit after three posts because you didn't get 10,000 views on day one.
