The "Silence Test" Your Videos Are Failing

If you want to know why your videos are not getting views, you need to run them through the silence test. Fifty percent of all videos on Instagram are watched on mute. People are scrolling while they are in meetings, on the train, or sitting in waiting rooms. If your video requires audio to make sense in the first three seconds, you are instantly losing half of your potential audience.

The silence test is simple. Play your video with the sound completely off. Can you understand what the video is about? Is there a visual hook? Is there text on the screen that clearly states the topic? If the answer is no, your video has failed. You are relying entirely on your voice to stop the scroll, and that is a losing strategy.

You have to design your content for the environment it is being consumed in. Use bold text, use physical props, or use a visual change in the first three seconds. Make sure that even if someone never turns their volume up, they still know exactly what problem you are solving. If you pass the silence test, you double your chances of being seen.
