The Danger of "Freestyling" on Camera

I see this happen all the time with highly educated professionals. A doctor or a lawyer will sit down in front of the camera, refuse to use a script, and decide they are just going to freestyle. They know their industry inside and out, so they assume they can just talk. It is almost always a disaster.

When you freestyle, your brain is working overtime to figure out what to say next. Because you are thinking so hard about the words, your personality completely disappears. Your tonality goes flat, your energy drops, and you start using filler words. You might be delivering great information, but you are delivering it in the most boring way possible.

If you are a beginner on camera, freestyling is not a strategy. You need a script. When the words are already prepared, your brain does not have to work to find them. You can focus entirely on your delivery, your pauses, and your hand gestures. Write the script, practice the delivery, and stop trying to wing it.
