The 465-Gesture Secret to Better Videos
If you want to know why your talking-head videos feel flat, look at your hands. Most people stand in front of a camera completely stiff, with their arms glued to their sides. They look like they are being held hostage. It makes the viewer uncomfortable, and it makes the content boring.
A recent study analyzed thousands of TED Talks to find out what made the best ones so engaging. The most popular talks used an average of four hundred and sixty-five hand gestures in eighteen minutes. The least popular talks used almost half that amount. The data is clear. Movement creates engagement.
Your hands are visual tools. They help paint the picture of what you are saying. When you use gestures, you naturally increase your energy and improve your tonality. You do not need to wave your arms around wildly, but you do need to stop standing still. Use your hands to emphasize your points, and watch your retention rates go up.
