Is Google search slowly dying? | How to prepare for AI Search.
If you're still paying for SEO and Google Ads, this is an important read for you.
Most business owners I talk to are still putting real money into SEO and Google Ads. So it's a fair question. If everyone is moving to ChatGPT, is that money wasted?
Short answer: no. Google is not going away. It still handles around 14 billion searches a day. The better estimates put ChatGPT somewhere between 4% and 12% of that.
Here's what did change. Google now answers the question itself. An AI summary sits at the top of the page, people read it, and they leave. Pew Research tracked real searches and found people click a website 8% of the time when an AI summary shows up. Without one, it's 15%. A 2025 Seer Interactive study found clicks on paid ads dropped on those searches too, by 68%.
So this isn't Google versus ChatGPT. Search itself is turning into AI answers, on Google and everywhere else.
And AI answers work differently. Instead of ten links, people get two or three names. A 2026 SOCi study looked at more than 350,000 business locations and found ChatGPT recommended 1.2% of them. Those same brands showed up in Google's local top three about 36% of the time.
I wouldn't stop SEO or ads. I'd stop assuming they're enough. Being on page one no longer means you're one of the names.
How AI decides who to name
AI doesn't keep a ranked list. When someone asks, it searches the web, reads what it finds, and names the businesses it can back up. Three questions decide whether you make the cut.
Can it find you? Your name, address, phone, and services need to match everywhere. Your website, Google Business Profile, Bing, and directories.
Can it trust you? Recent reviews, coming in steadily, on more than one platform.
Does it keep hearing about you? Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands. How often a brand gets mentioned across the web tracked with AI visibility about three times more closely than backlinks did.
The third one is where content comes in.
We post every day for our clients on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and LinkedIn. So I wanted to know if that work shows up in AI search. It does, but not equally.
YouTube is the strongest. In that same Ahrefs study, being mentioned in YouTube videos was the single best predictor of showing up in AI answers. AI reads the title, the description, and the transcript.
LinkedIn is second. Semrush found it cited in 14.3% of ChatGPT search answers. Posts from people get cited more than posts from company pages.
Two things I want to be straight about. Content alone won't get you recommended. It works on top of reviews and accurate listings, not instead of them. And these numbers move month to month as the tools change.
But the logic holds. Every post that names your business, your service, and your city is one more place AI can find you. Do that daily across five platforms and it adds up.
What I'd do
Keep your SEO and ads, but check what they're buying you. Look at clicks and leads, not rankings. Rankings can hold while clicks drop.
Fill out your Google Business Profile and claim your Bing listing. ChatGPT's search leans on Bing. Most businesses have never looked at theirs.
Make your details match everywhere. Same name, address, phone, and service list on every site.
Ask for reviews every week. Recent and steady beats a big batch from two years ago.
Answer real customer questions on video. What it costs, how long it takes, what to look for, what to avoid. These are the questions people ask AI.
Say it and write it. Say your business name, service, and city on camera. Put them in the caption, title, and description. AI can only use what it can read.
Post consistently, and include YouTube. If you're making short videos for Instagram and TikTok, the same videos should go on YouTube Shorts with a real title and description.
Test it yourself. Ask ChatGPT and Google for the best [your service] in [your city]. See who gets named.
Google isn't dying. It's turning into an AI answer, same as ChatGPT. And AI names the businesses it can find, verify, and keep hearing about. Listings and reviews cover the first two. Consistent content covers the third.
The clients we work with, where we help them with social media. This got added as an additional benefit without us doing anything, since we're posting consistently for them on YouTube Shorts and on LinkedIn.
if you have more traffic, AI sees that as a trusted source, and the chances of you being recommended by AI are much higher.
