Experience gets someone hired. Culture decides if they stay.

Two years ago, I looked at hiring in a very simple way. Do you have experience? Have you done this role before? Can you show me the work? Great, you are hired.

Now I pay far more attention to something I barely understood back then: culture fit.

Someone can be technically excellent and still be completely wrong for the team. If everyone is direct, energetic, and comfortable joking with each other, but the new person sits in the corner judging the environment because it does not feel corporate enough, the relationship will eventually break.

That does not make them a bad employee. It does not make the company unprofessional. It means the way they prefer to work does not match the way the team actually operates.

You have probably seen videos of another company’s workplace and thought, “I would never want to work there.” Good. Their culture did its job. It showed you who the environment is for and who should not apply.

Culture is not free snacks, a mission statement, or a list of values somebody asked ChatGPT to write. It is how people communicate when a deadline is tight. It is whether the team can challenge each other without creating drama. It is whether meetings feel productive or tense. It is whether building the company together is actually enjoyable.

Skills can often be trained. A constant mismatch in attitude is much harder to fix.

Before hiring, show candidates the real company. Let them meet the team. Explain how communication works, how feedback is given, and what the pace actually feels like. Do not present a polished version just to fill the seat. You want them to reject the environment early if it is not for them.

Experience might tell you whether someone can perform the task. Culture tells you whether everyone will still want to work together six months later.
