Don’t take advice from your nephews

I’ve spoken to quite a few business owners recently, and one recurring theme keeps coming up, content, social media, and ads are still areas many are trying to get a proper grasp on. That’s okay, these are evolving fields. However, what’s concerning is who they’re getting advice from.

Here’s a quick story I like to share, and trust me, this happens more often than you’d think.

The “Nephew” Effect:

Imagine you’re at the point where you know you need to be building a brand, creating videos, and generating leads through social media. Instead of consulting with an expert, someone who does this daily, you turn to your nephew. Why? Well, he uses social media and makes some TikToks, right?

Now you’ve effectively put your 16 year old Nephew in charge of your brand building operations and getting you results for your business.

He comes to you and says, “This is a good video we made, let’s put money behind it.” You boost the post because, well, why not? He knows social media, right? But weeks, months go by, and nothing happens. No results, no growth.

The Real Problem:

Six months later, you’ve gotten zero from your socials and you come to the conclusion that this strategy doesn’t work. When, in reality, nothing effective was done in the first place.

Fast forward another 8 months. Leads are dry, so you reach out to a professional, someone who specializes in exactly this. But now, you’re approaching it from the perspective of “I’ve tried this before, it didn’t work,” when in truth, you never really tried it properly.

Think of it this way, would you let your nephew do your taxes?

Final Thoughts:

The last thing you want is to be driving the wrong way on a one-way road. That’s exactly what happens when you have the wrong people in charge of critical aspects of your business.

So next time, be careful who you take advice from, especially when it comes to building your brand and driving real business results.
